The Unity Of The Mind And Body Essay Example For Students

The Unity Of The Mind And Body Essay Both Michel De Montaigne and John Donne argue that the cultivation of the mind is linked to the well being of the body. Both argue that a mind void of proper enrichment and education will lead to an unhealthy body. However, Montaigne argues that the appropriate means of education and enrichment; are studying and following the works of other great thinkers of history. Additionally, Montaigne declares imagination to be the impetus for the downfall of the body. Conversely, Donne argues that a mind groomed in imagination is the proper mode of finding bodily health. In their writings, both Montaigne and Donne are seeking a unity between the mind and the body. By comparing Montaignes Essays and the poetry of Donne, it is evident that the means for unifying the mind and body can vary for different people. Montaignes general philosophy on the relationship between the mind and the physical health of the body is one that associates a healthy existence with a healthy mind. His idea of a healthy mind is that which is learned through the studies of the great thinkers; of the past, and steered clear of being taken control of by the omnipotent imagination. Montaigne links these few genres of education directly to the well being of the body. First, Montaigne declares that The mind that harbours philosophy should, by its soundness, make the body sound also;(pg. 67). Here he argues that anyone who is soundly based in the philosophy of the great thinkers; of history will have the wellness of body that they desire. He states that The most manifest sign of wisdom is a constant happiness; its statealways serene;(pg. 67). Montaignes obvious foremost concern is that people be educated in the thinking of great thinkers. Secondly, Montaigne addresses the types of free thinking that are appropriate for a healthy mind and body. He argues that the free thought of a person should be based in the thought of the great thinkers. ; Montaigne says if a person embraces the opinions of Xenophon and Plato by his own reasoning, they will no longer be theirs, but his;(pg. . He encourages people to imbibe their ways of thought;(pg. 56). Montaignes argument is that free thinking not based in the thought of the great thinkers; is simply uneducated freethinking, and thus is unhealthy for the mind and body. Finally, Montaignes essay On the Education of Children; reveals Montaignes argument against the learning of profitless; knowledge, or in other words. He says that most of the branches of knowledge in current usage are valueless to us;(pg. and that we must limit the extent of our studies in those branches;(pg. 65). Montaignes apparent argument is that only a certain type of education, one based strongly in the thought of the great thinkers,; is the type of education that will provide for not only a healthy body, but also a healthy mind. In Montaignes essay On the Power of the Imagination,; Montaigne next argues against the perils of the imagination. He declares that the imagination, unlike freethinking based in acceptable knowledge, leads directly to an unhealthy body. Montaigne first attacks the sheer power of the imagination. Montaigne states regarding the imagination that Everyone feels its impact, but some are knocked over by it;(pg. 36). He contends that the imagination is something that slowly begins to take over the mind of a person and drive them further from the appropriate lines of learning. He argues that the imagination leads to the harm of the body. His first claim on this is that bad thoughts, such as having bodily failures (Montaigne uses the example of impotence), are spawned from the imagination. .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d , .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d .postImageUrl , .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d , .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d:hover , .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d:visited , .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d:active { border:0!important; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d:active , .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u230055005f907a40db5a2a067010d61d:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Libel And Invasion Of Privacy EssayHe declares that the comical impediments which so embarrass our society that they talk of nothing else are most likely caused by apprehensions and fears;(pg. 39). These apprehensions and fears are brought on, Montaigne argues, by an imagination that controls the mind and body. Montaigne even goes as far as to call imagination the culprit for many people falling ill, as he says that the reason some people become sick is that their imaginations concoct how bad they could feel, and their bodies simple follow suit. He states that the mind must generally be prepared in advance. pg. 41) in order for the body to feel a certain way. Montaignes whole argument in the essay reflects his distaste for the cultivation of a mind through imagination and his idea that imagination leads to an unhealthy mind and consequently, an unhealthy body. John Donnes general viewpoint on the relationship between the mind and the health of the body differs greatly from Montaignes. Donnes theory is simply that the path to a healthy body is an imagination. He claims that the imagination is the machine responsible for creating the ideas that make the body feel good. As for education, he argues that the highest forms of education are not from history books or philosophers, but from the deeper and more imaginative forms. In Donnes poems The Canonization; and The Will,; Donne presents the argument that there is a knowledge to be sought that is much deeper and truer than any book knowledge. In The Canonization,; Donne boldly states that earthly knowledge and materialistic cultivation of the mind is far below the education of the mind through love. He says: For Godsake hold your tongue and let me love With wealth your state, your minde with Arts improve, Take you a course, get you a place, Observe his honour, or his grace Contemplate, what you will approve, So you will let me love;(pg. 28). Here Donne states that to him the ultimate knowledge is that of love and that he would choose this before all other earthly types of knowledge. Donne argues that love can teach all necessary knowledge in life. He continues this argument in his poem The Will,; in which he discusses all of the knowledge that love has imparted on him. He states: Thou, Love, hast taught mee That I should give to none, but such, as had too much before Onely to give such as have an incapacatie Onely to give to those that count my gifts indignity;(pg. 60). Donne reveals hear some of the lessons that love has taught to him. Donnes obvious argument is that the knowledge that is held in a book cannot be paralleled to that which can be learned through the higher ways of learning such as love. In Donnes poems The Flea; and The Dreame; Donne lets his imagination go and argues that the imagination can be used in order to achieve a healthy and happy mind and body. First, in The Flea,; Donne sets up a very imaginative metaphor as he uses a flea to act as the means of uniting him with his woman. He tells his woman that in this flea, our two bloods mingled bee;;(pg. 48) and continues to say that This flea is you and I;(pg. 48). This very use of the flea stretches the imagination to a great extent, as it places a seemingly bothersome insect into the place of tying together two people through its blood. It is evident then that Donnes support for the imaginative went as far as placing it into the love poems he wrote to try to seduce his woman. Donnes belief in imagination was wholehearted. As for relating this use of the imagination to the well being of the body, Donne addresses this as well. Donnes imaginatively crafted metaphor is also a well-planned out scheme to seduce his woman. In other words, Donne uses the imagination to help make his body feel better by seducing and sleeping with his woman. His argument to his woman is that since the flea has drawn blood from each of them and the two have already exchanged the most special of bonds, that sleeping together would not be anything wrong. He tells her: Thou knowst that this cannot be said .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 , .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 .postImageUrl , .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 , .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749:hover , .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749:visited , .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749:active { border:0!important; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749:active , .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749 .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u022d9112844a97c5977e8bbc3abca749:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) -- Pakistan tested a seco EssayA sinne, nor losse of maidenhead, Yet this enjoyes before it wooe, And pamperd swells with one blood made of two, And this, alas, is more than we would doe;(pg. 48). Here we see Donne putting into practice his argument that the imagination can be used in order to get the body what it desires. In his poem The Dreame,; Donne parallels his dreaming, or imagination, to the very woman of whom he is dreaming in the poem. During the poem, Donne dreams of a great sexual fantasie with his woman, and soon enough, she walks into the bedroom to find him dreaming. However, Donnes dream is not interrupted, but rather it continues w ith her entrance. He says: Therefore thou wakdst me wisely; yet My Dreame thou brokst not, but continuedst it, Thou art so truth, that thoughts of thee suffice, To make dreames truths; and fables histories; Enter these armes, for since thou thoughtst it best, Not to dreame all my dreame, lets act the rest;(pg. 45). Donnes apparent argument is then one that declares imagination to be the precursor to reality. He argues that if a person does not first imagine how a certain circumstance will result, then they will certainly not have the pleasure of knowing what circumstances may follow. In other words, Donne believes the imagination to be a passageway from mental health and pleasure to bodily health and pleasure. Montaigne and Donne are two people seeking the same result: a unity between the mind and body. Both incorporate their compelling philosophies into their writing and present convincing arguments in order to explicate their theories. Each of the two agree that the body and the mind are related, and additionally that the imagination is a powerful controller of both the mind and body. However, the two disagree in their sentiments towards what types of learning and creativity create a healthy mind and body. Each of the two present their respective theories in very coercive arguments, and yet very disparate arguments. However, the two may have more ecumenically similar qualities when brought into modern society. Perhaps the greater message imparted upon the reader by the two authors is that the unity between the mind and the body is found through different means for different people. Each person must seek out their own form of mental cultivation that will help them to achieve both a healthy mind and a healthy body.

Free Essays on Descartes Explains It All

While I am normally opposed to tedious labor, I found that reading Descartes’ Discourse on Method much less of a chore than I had anticipated. I hesitate to say that I enjoyed it; perhaps it would be best to say that I found it interesting. I was unable to materialize a singular argument encompassing to the entire work. Although, I was able to compose three separate opinions, each pertaining to different parts of the work: there is error with his thoughts about the reason people have; Descartes shares some ground with Richelieu; and the advice Descartes offers is for a much different end than that of Machiavelli of Richelieu. I immediately find myself in opposition to Descartes as he implies that all people are endowed with the same ability of reason. Being a Darwinist myself, in that I truly believe that some individuals possess an innate advantage over others, I am unable to relate to his assertions. This is partly due to the juxtaposition of Descartes’ optimism as a result of experience and religious devotion and my own juvenile cynicism as a result of inexperience and religious ambiguity. It could be argued that Descartes addresses my opinions by referring to the different ways people apply their reason. I am skeptical that this is an adequate explanation, though. Individuals have unique ways of interpreting images: some of us have to wear glasses, some of us suffer from a form of colorblindness, while still others are completely blind. In this same way, I am sure that different people have different ways of reasoning things, but that does not mean there are those devoid of such a faculty. Those individuals, in my opinion, are those individuals engaging in chronic self-destructive behaviors (e.g.: chemical dependence, abusive relationships, crime, etc.). Philippines Literature Essay Example for Free

Philippines Literature Essay The diversity and richness of Philippine literature evolved side by side with the countrys history. Long before the Spaniards and other foreigners landed or set foot on Philippine shores, our forefathers already had their own literature stamped in the history of our race. Our ancient literature shows our customs and traditions in everyday life as traced in our folk stories, old plays and short stories. Our ancestors also had their own alphabet which was different from that brought by the Spaniards. LITERATURE: the body of oral and written works, text, books, poetry, etc. these are the several things that concern this subject. we have been exposed to literature ever since we were young. reading, writing, thats what we do. but is this really the essence of literature?  the time i realized that i was going to take up Philippine Literature this semester, i was rather a bit curios about what would be in store for me, for the whole class.  our Literature instructor Ms. Dinah Laguna-Mission is very enthusiastic in teaching us. never came a time that i felt sleepy or bored during our lit. subject. she has a lively voice and pronunciation, lively gestures and the witty use of words were the things i looked forward to every time she came.  at first, i expect that the subject content and the teaching method was just a repetition of what has been taught to us during high school. but i was wrong, the different genre of literature, different devices and ever famous figures of speech were the ones being taught to us. After all the experiences and new knowledge imparted to me, i realized that Literature is not only about just reading the stories, poems, riddles, etc. but either its understanding them deeply. i thank Ms. Mission for imparting this knowledge imparted to me and the whole class for making this journey bearable and truly enjoyable one. it was beyond doubt an accomplishment for us and so, even if i finish the subject Philippines Literature, the things i  learned, the memories and experience will truly mo no matter what. ^_^

Reintroducing the Wolf to Yellowstone Essay examples -- Wolves Park An

Reintroducing the Wolf to Yellowstone Wolves have always been a symbol of the wild, free in spirit and roamers of the land. These animals are considered majestic and protectors of the wilderness. They have always roamed the western United States, although their population has fluctuated over time. Over the past 10 years wolf reintroduction into Yellowstone National Park has been a controversial topic to those of the United States. As of 1995, wolves have been reintroduced into the park. This has come with some strong opposition and yet has prevailed. The future of the wolf in Yellowstone park is now looking bright, although not certain since there still are those who want them banished again. History Many hundreds of years ago wolves roamed the entire North American continent with no barriers and very few predators. As settlers moved into the United States, wolves became more and more scarce in the wild of America. As the wilderness areas of the United States declined, so did the population of the wolf, until there were only a few spots in the wild where wolves could still be found. Wolves used to thrive in the western United States. There was ample game to hunt and plenty of places to live and wander. Until people moved in, wolves were settled. As European settlement expanded to the west, it began to take its toll on the wolves and their habitat. Clearing of the forests came first, which was then accompanied by significant over-hunting in this area (Noceker). Slowly wolves became concentrated into smaller and smaller areas in the west. Finally, they were assumed to be bothers to the ranchers and farmers and maybe a threat to those people who lived in the area. As the United States matured, people realized that ... ...h. As the United States matured, people realized that ... ...h. Association football and substitute goalkeeper Essay

The goalkeeper is the most specialised position in football. A goalkeeper’s job is mainly defensive: to guard the team’s goal from being breached (to not let the other team score). Goalkeeper is the only position defined in the Laws of the Game. Goalkeepers are the only players allowed to touch the ball with their hands and arms, however they are restricted to doing so only within their penalty area; for this reason, they must wear jerseys that distinguish them from other outfield players and the referee. If a goalkeeper is sent off or injured, and there is no substitute goalkeeper available, an outfield player must take the goalkeeper’s place and put on the appropriate identifying uniform.[3]. The discipline of goalkeeping is so specialised that it is very rare in the professional game for a goalkeeper to play in any other position. One notable exception is Jorge Campos of Mexico, who played effectively as a striker when called upon.[4]. A goalkeeper with good technical skill may opt to take his team’s penalties and free kicks though this is rare as the goalkeeper would be caught out of position if possession is conceded immediately after the kick. Josà © Luis Chilavert, formerly of Và ©lez Sà ¡rsfield and Paraguay, and Rogà ©rio Ceni of Sà £o Paulo and Brazil are well-known free-kick and penalty specialists with over 100 goals to their names. Hans-Jà ¶rg Butt is the goalkeeper to have scored in the most different competitions, having scored in all of Germany’s top four divisions, the German cup and the UEFA Champions League. [5][6][7] Physical strength, height, jumping ability and judgement are valued qualities for goalkeepers to have in order to deal with aerial balls and agility, quick reactions and a good positional sense are all needed for shot stopping.[8][9] The standard football skills of ball control, tackling, passing and dribbling are not usually required in a goalkeeper, although the introduction of the back-pass rule in the early 1990s has necessitated improvement on such skills.[10].
